This engraving was made in conjuction with one done of James White for the book Eminent and Self-made Men of Michigan, printed in 1878. It was widely used and was probably the last one the Whites had made at the same time before James's death in 1881. It is also the photograph that James White included in the front of his and Ellen's autobiography, Life Sketches of James and Ellen White, published in 1880.
