Ve.Z:
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Liz: I like to play tennis, listen to music, especially the Jonas Brothers, and go shopping with my friends.
Ve.Z: Do you have any hobbies?
Liz: I like using photo editing programs on the computer and IM.
Ve.Z: Do your parents put any parameters on your Internet usage?
Liz: Yes, I have to buy time to use the Internet.
Ve.Z: How do you “buy time?”
Liz: Well, I’m taking piano and violin lessons and I’m teaching myself to play the guitar. I have to practice a minimum of 45 minutes a day and then I can use the Internet for 45 minutes. Basically, it’s a trade off. For every minute that I practice, I can use the Internet for a minute.
Ve.Z: Do you wish you could use the Internet more or do you think this program of buying time works pretty well for you?
Liz: At first I really didn’t like the idea of it, but it really does work and helps me manage my time. I get my homework done sooner. I also like the progress I’m making on the piano and the minute for minute plan helps motivate me to practice!
Ve.Z: Can you do anything you want on the Internet?
Liz:
I have my own account that I sign in on, and my parents
use the program NetNanny to filter the sites I can access.
They also are able to log on to my account and see what
sites I’ve been on.
Ve.Z: How do you communicate with your friends when you’re out of school?
Liz: I use the phone, text, and yahoo.messenger.
Ve.Z: Do you like to watch TV?
Liz: Yes. My favorite programs are Gossip Girl and American Idol.
Ve.Z: Do you ever feel like the media wastes your time?
Liz: Yeah, actually, sometimes I feel guilty for spending so much time on the Internet because I want to get good grades and stay on the honor roll, and that takes more time studying than it did when I was younger and the schoolwork was easier.
Ve.Z: Does any of your entertainment give you time with your family?
Liz: Yes, tennis! We play it as a family even in the winter when it’s cold. Sometimes a couple of our friends’ families go with us to play tennis.
Ve.Z: Do you have personal devotions?
Liz: Yes, I read the Bible sometimes. I try to relate what I read to my daily life. Mostly, my devotions are with the family.
Ve.Z: Does what you are doing sometimes get in the way of devotions?
Liz: Sometimes. I might be on the Internet and it’s hard to pull away for family worship.
Ve.Z:
Thanks so much, Liz, for taking the time for this interview.
It was great getting to know you a little better!
