The Effects of Sleep

Allen, age 14

Allen was in 8th grade this past school year. He attended Ardmore Adventist Academy
when he wrote this essay.

Do you like to sleep? More important, do you actually need to sleep? I’ve discovered that sleep helps with health, school, behavior, and overall wellness. So don’t skimp on the zzzzzzzz’s!

About one-third of a person’s life is spent in sleep, which might seem like a waste of time. However, studies have shown that eight hours of sleep a night will help people get better grades on tests, reduce the risk of accidents, and help maintain a better immune system. Young children should have an average of 11-13 hours of sleep a night. Children who get adequate sleep will be more alert, have better memories, fewer behavioral problems, and even be less “moody.”

Some studies were done on people to see how much sleep a person needs and what happens when you don’t get enough sleep. People were deprived of sleep for eight days and nights. By the end of the study, they began showing signs of mental disturbances, visions, and hallucinations. They tried to fall asleep in any environment.

sleepyPeople in everyday life would not go eight days without sleep. However, if you go twenty-four hours or more without sleep, you might begin experiencing problems similar to the ones the people had in the experiment. Even the time when you sleep is important. Melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep, is highest during the night, and so it is best to sleep during the night instead of the day.

Sleep is a vital essential to life. It can be an aid to those who suffer from depression, anxiety, and problems with the simple things in life. By getting adequate sleep and taking care of our physical and mental wellbeing in other ways, we can have a more active and meaningful experience with God.
